Im gonna Quote myself here, to say; here is a reply thread on my thoughts for getting involved with groups online.
Short Version: Its a lot like IRL, you get to know people casually and go from there.

Personally I think its a bit like how you find people IRL. Sure there are spaces you can just walk in on someones play and join, but most of the time you find where those people hang out and talk to people. I go to the bar, and if someone sits next to be I make talk we get to know each other.
