Liberace was at least 36 years old, and the first living northern cassowary I ever saw in person. He is included in numerous scientific publications, including our recent 2026 biofluorescence study. Liberace will live on as an educational & scientific ambassador for cassowaries.
This was such an amazing trip! So happy to have had @tetzoo.bsky.social make the trip across the pond to experience it with me!

Sad news today. Liberace, the northern #cassowary I have studied since 2013 passed away this weekend. Liberace was a curious, dynamic, and wonderful bird. I am quite saddened by his death, but feel fortunate to have spent time in his presence and experience his unique personality. He will be missed.

Scientists were surprised to discover cassowaries glow under ultraviolet light. It may help the birds distinguish between different species.
Back in 2023, I visited Florida and had the most incredible time with @thecassowarykid.bsky.social. Encounters with multiple live (captive) cassowaries, most of which had to be captured and moved to a new facility
