While past work has found that inter vivos transfers are highly unequal within families, bequests are relatively more equal. In contrast, our results show that, rather than correcting earlier inter vivos inequality, bequests serve to reinforce existing financial inequality between siblings.

Combining data on parent-child dyads in the HRS with a family fixed effects design to adjust for family background differences, we show that receiving more financial support from parents is associated with a higher likelihood of receiving a bequest and one of higher value.
