The 1877–78 El Niño was the strongest and most devastating El Niño event on record. Sea surface temps in the Pacific spiked to 3.5°C above average. It triggered severe global droughts, crop failures and famines that resulted in over 50 million deaths worldwide (out of 1,5 billion total population).
