There is a reason war crime doctrine doesn't accept a "but they also do it / they did it first" defense. Targeting civilians is a war crime. It would be a war crime if the US does it. It would be a war crime if Iran does it. And both of those do not depend at all on the actions of the other.

I was part of a team doing an evaluation in Sudan once and we attended a community development workshop. The organizers had promised donors equal gender representation. A couple of women invitees didn't show, so they grabbed the two ladies serving tea and had them sit at the workshop table. 1/n
These poor women. Had no idea what was going on, had limited Arabic, and were desperate to get back outside to their actual responsibilities. I think about this sometimes when people get a too obsessed with "who's not in the room." 100% important, but always a means to an end, not an end itself. 2/2
