In Qatar, the quality of football helped get FIFA out of the hole it dug for itself. That's not going to happen this time.
Let us have a rapid global campaign to have the Somalian referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan referee at least one match in Canada or Mexico. FIFA should facilitate, not impede, that. The Canadian/Mexican government should pursue it too
The thing is that this is so blatantly racist and such an affront to sporting merit of a referee who climbed the ladder under incredibly hard circumstances that any and every decent sports fan gets it and is angered by it. It’s just gut-level wrong and that cuts through.

My day job is at a rural branch of a public library, and we have a Pride display. Yesterday I was at the desk when a man came in. Fifties, maybe, or sixties. Plaid shirt, mesh trucker cap, suspenders. He went up to the display and just stood there for a long moment. Then he came up to the desk. 🧵 1/
