It wasn’t so much erasing the memory as systematic, official desecration. There’s a connection to iconoclasm here, and also to Christianizing pagan spaces, that needs to be demonstrated further.

Today's the feast of St Anthony of Padua, a 13th Century Portugese friar, his vision of the Christ child in a mural by Gilbert Pownall at St Patrick Soho Square, London. Anthony was canonised within a year of his death in 1231 for his saintly care for the poor and the sick. 1/2
