really fucking hate how "accessibility" has been hijacked to mean "let's treat everyone as if they're children at all times"
Jane Yolen was an absolutely lovely human and also an almost absurdly talented writer. It's wonderful when both things are wrapped up in the same person. I considered her a friend and a colleague, and I will miss her. Condolences to the each of the many of us who knew her. Her memory is a blessing.
I mostly knew him through cultural osmosis but he had to work damn hard to get there. Pour one out for one of the greats.

One thing science fiction writers failed to account for was that the purported information revolution would beam so much data and noise into people's heads that their ability to discern things would just stop working altogether.
"This world used to be a super high tech advanced civilisation, but now it looks exactly like a medieval world." I have very, VERY rarely seen this trope done right and 90% of it is just Roman propaganda.

My own fanfic cares way more about the post-POST Targaryen era by the by.
I really think that since the end of Game of Thrones the Fandom (and Martin himself) have moved on more to exploring the rise and fall of House Targaryen as the more interesting story. And while it is a full and rich history, without the last books it's also incomplete!
I have the final lines of all my in progress novels typed, but there's a few pesky "in between" bits that are in the way of celebrating 😅
I've always been interested in the defences created on frontiers. The Muscovite Zasechnaya cherta (or Great Abatis) was a series of fortified lines designed to deter and intercept Cossack raiders! It varied in effectiveness, but it was a fascinating effort at border control!

I do tend to get frustrated when people just think of or portray the past as this dark, grim and ever miserable place. Yes it wasn't as great as the present but people had fun and enjoyed things!

James Joyce is gonna read this and come back from the dead so he can publish Finnegan's Wake 2 out of sheer spite.
