I've been growing my self-esteem and it's hard, changing anything foundational but maladaptive is hard. Once I recognized how my brain fails me (because my friend expressed concerns), I started trying to keep on top of noticing that reflex. His concern gave me the initial motivation to start.

"I'm so fucking terrible" -> "I'm not terrible but I realize I feel this way" -> "I'm not perfect but that's okay!" And now I'm actively recognizing that I say way more positive things about myself and feel pride even in small things. It's so hard but it's really worthwhile.
Learning to like myself required doing it for someone else because it was a real issue but also my friend was my accountability and kept me going, because feeling uncomfortable with noticing how mentally ill I was was a hard task. But I noticed the reflex and then worked on neutrality
