But yes, play Contra. It's wonderful, it's challenging, it's a blast with two players and the music is incredible. Some interesting alternate versions to play are the Euro-release Probotector, where everything is reskinned as robots, or the Famicom release with extra cutscenes and graphic effects.
The Konami Code went on to be used in dozens of Konami's games, and other developers began adding it to their own, and then extended further on into pop culture.

Contra is the legendary run 'n gun game that hit the NES in 1988 & blew anyone away that tried it. It had a sense of scale unlike anything else on the NES at the time; Bosses were enormous, enemies blitzed you non-stop & you had to get good fast or use the code...

The Konami code. Contra wasn't the first game to use it - that would be Gradius, where Kazuhisa Hashimoto, who was in charge of its NES port, added it to grant a fully powered up ship to help with QA testing. It was used in Contra to give you 30 lives, where it became a godsend for hapless players.

@duckaislop.bsky.social I have another one for your list: The devs of 1666: Amsterdam have confirmed that the game currently contains AI-generated assets. They used the classic "temporary assets made their way into the game" excuse and say the assets will be patched out.
