hello, let's talk about steam machines, hardware and console costs, and the general economics of tech manufacturing right now, while i play control: twitch.tv/aegies
i'm going to screw over my own wish by saying the following: even before the current AI situation with material costs, the next console generation was going to jump in price a fair bit. process shrinks aren't yielding cost savings like they used to. the ps5 pro was a canary in 2024.
the only "good" console news i have for people is that i think there's a decent chance you'll be able to sell your ps5 or series x for a profit around the time GTA6 comes out, because i don't think there's any way there's enough hardware for the demand.
This season of interview/the vampire lestat is making me miss Anthony Bourdain something fierce.
last week i wrote up a sort of explainer breaking down 1) why video game consoles are so expensive (it's not just RAM/storage), 2) the likelihood of price reductions (0% through 2027), and 3) second order effects (console shortages/zero stock/grey market gouging). www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/r...

i would like to go two weeks without talking about this stuff now. please.
at $1050 for the entry level steam machine i'd guess valve is about breaking even on them.
hello, i'm going to play the next fest demo of the transylvania adventures of simon quest and probably a few other things too: twitch.tv/aegies
