This is Pamela Griffin. Back then, Black people weren't allowed to buy city land so her family settled outside, next to the farmer. Seeing them play baseball, the farmer told them he'd donate his land for a park—and put it in a deed. The city still sold it.

I think a lot of people (academic colleagues inclusive) have forgotten why some of us became academics. Unlike them we did not do it for the prestige and the chance to be a comprador for companies and other pathetic anti-intellectual vested interests, but because we wanted to do this actual job. 1/
