Or in the words of my ancestor, the Degel Machne Ephraim, grandson of the Baal Shem Tov:
"In every generation the Torah needs to be reinterperated according to the needs of that generation." And "denying that is heresy."
That's how we survived. Not by refusing change, but by embracing it.
