the zelda and starfox design discourses are more or less the same.
nintendo isn't reimaginging the characters; it's delivering on the original promise from instruction manuals and magazine ads.

Not saying that I care for the art style — not saying I have any opinion at all based one darkly lit character model — but will note that Ocarina of Time kind of was chasing that art style at the time, in a Nintendo 64 way. That seems like a fairly logical extension of it, for better or worse.
