WTAF?
I wrote "did not not." That accidental double negative messed up my message. To be clear:
- Takei did not show off his samurai sword skills.
- The actor had no such skills, in any case.
- The con organizers never said he would do this.
- Some 1970s journalists were both lazy and racist.

1970s journalists were often terrible. From the Ottawa Citizen, July 22, 1976, about the Toronto Star Trek '76 convention:
"George Takei, who played Sulu, the oriental helmsman, will show off his skills with a samurai sword."
That did not not happen, and was never promised by the organizers.
