One way to view the Obama election is the last attempt for the demos to re-assert itself. They swung 10 points from 2004 and elected Obama by a landslide to regulate the economy and end wars. Instead he handed financial policy over to bankers and functionally started an entirely new form of warfare.

People operationalize democracy as “X institution does/does not perform Y function,“ but democracy is ultimately about whether the demos has their preferences reflected in governance. The tie between public preferences and policy was severed well before Trump.
Through a combination of Obama’s own failures and cowardice and the full radicalization of the GOP, the Obama era locked in US imperialism, corrupted elections, financial deregulation, and the oligarchic takeover of the commanding heights by the tech sector. In other words, the death of democracy.
Liberals often think of Trump as the figure who destroyed US democracy, but he is much better understood as the figure who exploited and took the reins of a country where democracy was already functionally dead
