Per tsunami.gov, the official US Government website for tsunami info, there is no danger of tsunami for the US West Coast from today’s M7.8 earthquake in the Philippines. Areas closer to the earthquake area (Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia) may experience a tsunami. Updates are on the website.

I had the opportunity for a quick tour of the (relatively) new rock mechanics lab at the USGS Moffett Field campus. The work they do to understand earthquake physics at small scale of a block of granite is mind boggling.
