Another striking development is the surge in refusals of Syrian asylum claims. We've moved from granting nearly 100% of claims, followed by a pause in decisions after the fall of Assad, and now a collapse in the grant rate.

Lots in today's migration stats, but one striking new figure is the sharp fall in asylum seekers in hotels. In March 2026 hotel numbers were 20,900 - down by nearly a third from three months before. This appears to be driven by faster processing rather than a shift to different accommodation.

Today's net migration statistics show that 171,000 more people arrived in the UK than left in 2025. That's down 82% compared to the historical high seen in early 2023 (944,000).
