My followers on here will be SHOCKED to hear this, but our approach has mostly been door #3: Let Stubbs train us out of any expectations that don't comport with his wishes. Fortunately, he's an extremely sweet boy, so none of those wishes are particularly pernicious.

One of the things about doing almost 100% positive reinforcement training is that it really makes you challenge a lot of your own assumptions. The thing is, it's not that negative reinforcement doesn't WORK. It does work.
