Josef Lewinsky as Carlos (1895) is one of Klimt’s most sophisticated early portraits. It captures the actor's identity rather than just his costume. Klimt uses the ghostly theater scene on the left to bridge the gap between the performer's reality and his craft.
Farmhouses with Birch Trees (1900) reinterprets nature as a rhythmic, vertical grid. The white birch trunks act like architectural columns, slicing the landscape into orderly segments that shift the focus from a traditional vista to a flat, decorative pattern.
In 1996, a student discovered through X-ray analysis that Portrait of a Lady (1917) was painted directly over an earlier, lost work from 1912. The original showed a woman in a large hat and scarf. It remains one of his most haunting and mysterious works.
