As a veteran, I genuinely am ashamed of it most of the time. I cringe a bit inside when people thank me for my "service". I only bring it up occasionally when there is a discount, and feeling like I have some kind of "unfair advantage" for 10% off a dumb thing in hard times is a shitty feeling.
