Honestly, one of the first hints that things were going downhill was post-bi-regeneration, when Donna asked if the Doctor 'comes in a range of colours.'
In hindsight, it was absolutely insane for RTD to go on the radio and hype up "a press release is coming soon!" knowing full well the news was that the show just simply won't exist for the next few years and that he'd completely given up
I would not be surprised if a full reboot were proposed next, leaving Billie Piper's CGI'd head as the show's final image, which is just a little bleak.
I genuinely think a rest is a good thing - the show needs it to survive and come back, but it's been handled in such a damaging and ungracious way, built on lies and misdirection (and a panic-ending to the show itself). I don't know how you go forward without some serious backtracking. #DoctorWho
