Quebec's hydro utility is seeking to significantly raise electricity prices for data centres and cryptocurrency operations.
Canada currently has 1.6 gigawatts of data centre capacity, but the projects in the pipeline would balloon that number to 13.2 gigawatts.
Most of those projects are slated for Alberta, where they’d be powered by natural gas — meaning a lot more emissions.
