I think there is also the hippy/ metalhead dynamic that goes on with fandoms ("hippies are often the worst people you meet pretending to be nice and metalheads the nicest pretending to be mean") with fandoms that could be expected to attract really vile people bring more prepared to guard against it
this is the thing with fandoms. 10% of all groups are going to be shitheads and the bigger the fandom the more shitheads you'll encounter. i feel like this has some sort of name, this rule, and if it doesn't it really should because it's the one thing non-fandom people continually do not understand
