While they were concentrating their efforts against the rebels in small towns in the desert, JNIM was getting stronger around Bamako. They thought it would be a good idea to take back the north and feed propaganda. It backfired

Syria showed them what is possible. This does not mean that JNIM will do it to the letter, but it proves that there is a pathway to power. Though, one way or another, they will have to make concessions and enter into deals with others
