At HRP headquarters where S/Sgt. Nick Pepler is speaking about a rise in imitation gun calls throughout HRM.
He said there’s been 60 calls since January, with 20 involving youth.
One person remains unaccounted for as fire crews continue to fight a multi-building blaze in Bridgewater.
He says they respond like they are real weapons until proven otherwise, especially with how realistic they look.
Pepler adds HRP are asking the public, especially as it relates to youth, to spread the work that imitation fire arms are dangerous and put people at risk, with police unable to tell the difference when responding to calls.
An airsoft Beretta.
Onsite for @thechronicleherald.bsky.social: a half dozen fire departments on scene for a structure fire in Town of Bridgewater. Fire fighters currently working to stop the spread of the flames on King Street.
One is a BB gun; one is a police issue fire arm. Pepler says the weight and materials are very similar and indistinguishable from afar.
New: Police have responded to three calls a week involving imitation weapons since Jan. 1. Now, they want the public's helping spreading the word about the dangers of fake guns,.
