In general, it's harder to get new, gruesome stories made in today's sterilized and safe climate, unless it's through irony, political commentary, or via patronizing academic lenses.
Hell it WAS hard back then too! But at least eventually a studio or publisher gave it a chance
I've had people aware of my creative pursuits come to me with the intent to impress me with their own dark, creative ideas, and then be upset when I had nothing to say about it.
It's a really bad mentality to have to seek validation in that manner, like a measurement or gauge of some kind.
Something I've had to warn people about is that my fascination with the macabre is very real. There's a style of dark or adult media that's either safe and marketable, or self fellating on it's depiction of misery that it's either cute or boring, but not my thing personally.
