I wish this was true about people taking duis seriously but I suspect a large factor in decreased drinking is increased prices. The cost of a pint of beer has outpaced inflation the last 25 years and one surety about alcohol consumption is that people are very price sensitive
one of my more crank urbanism opinions is that the loneliness crisis is at least partially downstream from people actually taking DUIs seriously now (good) and that making it much rarer that they indulge (both good and bad) because they have to drive everywhere (bad)
