OTD in 1900, the US annexed Hawaiʻi after an orchestrated coup 7 years earlier. 20 years later, the native population shrank by 50%. Today, the native population stands at 10.8% of the total population, and 1.7% speak Hawaiian. The population never recovered from their contact with Europeans.
