Absolutely. If you say ‘football’ where I grew up in county Limerick, it’s assumed you’re talking about Gaelic football. On the phone to my dad, I have to say soccer for clarity’s sake. It is not purely an Americanism.

Once again, you might not like the word ‘soccer’, but it’s:
a) Not an Americanism; it is a 19th century English private school abbreviation of ‘Association’ rules, much as ‘rugger’ familiarises ‘Rugby’
b) Commonplace and useful in countries where ⚽️ is not the key code of football 🇦🇺 🇮🇪 🇺🇸 etc.
