Scientists have developed a new tool that makes bird genomes faster and easier to assemble β including tiny pieces of DNA that are usually missed. π¦ββ¬
The new tool, known as MicroFinder, could help improve research into bird evolution, biodiversity and conservation. π

MicroFinder can be used to assemble bird genomes much quicker and more accurately than ever before.
Sloths are the slowest mammals on the planet and now we know why. Scientists have sequenced the two-toed sloth genome and found βjumping genesβ linked to their extremely slow metabolism π¦₯

βThe importance of biodiversity is that it gives us a way to understand the world that we live in.β
We are excited to unveil the first of the GSCβs three new mandate videos: this one is on Biodiversity, Environment, & Agriculture which showcases our collaborations and impact in these sectors.
The headline finding is wild: the two-toed sloth genome contains 15,898 retrocopies.
That matters because retrocopies can preserve traces of genome evolution, helping researchers ask how duplicated genetic material may contribute to new traits.

Many sloth retrocopies are linked to mitochondrial function, energy production, and metabolism.
That makes the finding especially interesting for a species famous for conserving energy, moving slowly, and living life at a very different pace. π¦₯

This is exactly why chromosome-level reference genomes matter.
They let researchers see patterns that lower-quality assemblies can miss β from genome structure to gene copy history to the hidden mechanisms shaping biodiversity.
