Hurricane Melissa was one of the strongest hurricanes to impact Jamaica in recorded history, causing major damage to forests and wildlife habitats. Many birds lost food sources, shelter, and nesting sites.

The Antillean Nighthawk (Chordeiles gundlachii), also called Gimme-me-bit in Jamaica, foraging over the UWI Mona campus during a light drizzle.
These summer migrants return to Jamaica to breed and are often seen at dusk, after rain, catching flying insects on the wing.
