There are no threshold provisions in Nigeria; as long as the union’s congress votes in favour of strike action, a strike is lawful.
Union membership is automatically linked with employment – you cannot opt out of membership or striking.
In this essay, I compare academic trade unions in the UK & Nigeria and question their potential for bringing about fundamental change in working conditions in either place. There are major differences in structure & context but similarly have not improved conditions.
