For anyone in the bioinformatics/ evolutionary biology world my friend and previous colleague has created this blog with some very nice resources for getting into the area! 🧬

Today is #CFWeek and the Whelan lab are in yellow for #WearYellowDay to raise awareness and funds for the life-limiting genetic condition Cystic Fibrosis (CF). CF is without a cure and dominates thousands of lives everyday.

Had a great time at the Computational Symposium- such a valuable opportunity to connect with colleagues, hear about exciting projects, and share progress on my master’s research! Presenting my work on the Pyrenean Lake microbiome has been invaluable for gathering feedback and ideas for my analysis 🙂
Excited to be at #aquaecomics this week! Looking forward to networking and hearing insights relevant to my master project within PyriSentinel (pyrisentinel.eu), under @hannahbenisty.bsky.social 🧬⛰️
🎓 Huge congrats to our two @bist.eu Master’s students, Igor Trujnara and @rebeccawallis.bsky.social who successfully defended their theses this week!
🧬💻Igor explored Large Language Models for genome annotation, while Rebecca investigated microbial biodiversity in Pyrenean lakes🏔️.

In last week’s seminar we heard from @rebeccawallis.bsky.social about her work on the ecology and evolution of pathogens in CF 🫁
And @flanagella.bsky.social taught us about the importance of strain context in antibiotic resistance 💊
Thank you to @microbesng.bsky.social for our snacks!
📣 The Whelan lab is hiring a bioinformatics postdoc 📣
Together with @fabricejpierre.bsky.social, we are offering a 1-year bioinformatic PDRA position in comparative genomics of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. To find out more please visit whelanlab.co.uk/contact/. Applications close 3 April 2026!
This postdoctoral research position is part of a Cystic Fibrosis Canada Early Career Investigator Award funded for 3-years led by Dr. Fabrice Jean-Pierre and Dr. Fiona Whelan. The aim of this project is to identify the genetic changes that arise in the Pseudomonas aeruginosa genome following perturbations – such as antibiotic treatment – in an in vitro system. The PDRA will use a large dataset of P. aeruginosa genomes and experimental metadata to predict key mutationsto the organism.
This week, we had a great time attending the 19th Computational Genomics Symposium at @prbb.org, a very nice opportunity to catch up with colleagues 💻🧬☀️
