10 June 1972, Sammy Davis Jr. began a 3 week run at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 with his crossover hit, "The Candy Man". Ironically, Davis initially disliked the song—which had featured in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory—but it went on to become his signature chart-topper.
