I experienced this on every book, and every issue of Junior Skeptic. Total immersion in the home stretch—weeks when weekends, chores, paperwork, relationships are basically all on hold—is hard on you, and hard on those around you. (One bad boss was apoplectic learning I’d take a few days to recover)

Less obvious one: writing a book, in my experience, often requires you to just dip out of the world for long periods. Like, if you're trying to write something complex or develop a complex plot structure, you have to have total focus. Kelly and I started calling this "burning down the house."
