Just announced: OpenAI plans to lease a 9.2 gigawatt 100% fossil-fuelled data centre on Ohio.
Its emissions will be between 20 - 37 MTCO2-e - somewhere between the total grid emissions of France -> Netherlands
As much GHGs as 9.5 average coal plants. Will raise US total emissions by 0.5%

Today on Volts: a few weeks ago, NERC (which oversees the reliability of the bulk power grid) issued a rare "level 3" alert about data centers. It seems their habit of taking 100s of MWs offline in the blink of an eye doesn't play well with the rest of the system. We discuss solutions.
Also? It costs money to run fat gas pipes to a bunch of behind-the-meter gas turbines at a GW-scale data center. Does the data center company pay the full cost of interconnecting to the gas grid, or does the utility smear the costs over all gas ratepayers?
