when i was a kid in massachusetts we'd sometimes go up to maine on vacation and drive through falmouth maine where there was a papermill that made the entire town smell like a rotting wet dog 24/7

This is very hand wavy. Data center constantly consume tons of electricity and are noisy 24/7. Pretty unusual for a manufacturing factory to be going full tilt at 2am.
