I’ve published nearly 1,000 daily editions of _The Edinburgh Minute_ and I need your help, please. There are some running costs to keeping this going: hosting fees etc. But I’d like you to consider what the newsletter is worth to you. It exists to save you time and keep you better informed. Has it done that? Most of what I sift through, about 90%, never gets into the newsletter. All the clickbait rubbish on news websites, all the noise on social media and thousands of pages of council reports and council meetings watched. I wade through it all every day so you don’t have to. And I love doing it. As well as that, the _Minute_ has included more than 10,000 items sent in by readers. This absolutely blows my mind. None of those things were on my radar before. Some aren’t anywhere else online. They only exist in this newsletter and I think that’s where the _Minute_ adds the most value: from people who use it. I fully encourage more of that. **The news industry is broken** and locals are reclaiming it from the grassroots up. I love verifying it, putting it all together and I want to keep doing it. But I can only do it when readers pay to support it. I’ve **lowered the price today** for a mid-year summer discount celebrating the solstice. If you want to help ensure this **community-led news** project continues, please take up this offer: Get 20% off here Since last year’s mid-year discount offer, the number of **free subscribers** to this newsletter has **risen** again from 20,000 to 30,000. But the number who pay is miles off that. I understand £5 per month is not affordable for some. So as usual at this mid-year moment, I’ve knocked it down to £36 for the year, which equates to £3 per month and about 10p per day. ☕️ That’s less than the cost of a coffee in most places. Cheers to coffee, the other thing that fuels my 5am scramble to get the newsletter out on time every morning. I **give away** all my journalistic work for free, in the hope that some people will pay out of their own goodwill to help keep this newsletter going. But most don’t pay. That’s a choice, of course. But if you have found the Minute useful at all and you can afford it, please consider subscribing. I want to keep it going so you can stay in the loop. I believe local democracy will be healthier if we're all better informed. Your subscription will help keep me springing out of bed at 5am and the Minute landing at 7am daily in your inbox. Your subscription will also get you additional local content: The weekly **_Culture Minute_** , the **_weekend guide_** and the daily **_Edinburgh Festival Minute_** will return soon too, with the choice to opt-out, of course ✌️ 💚 Thanks so much for your support! I’m counting on it and can’t do it without you. Michael Get 20% off for 1 year 🎈 PS. Here’s a kind note from writer Ian Rankin about why he subscribes: And he’s not alone in supporting the newsletter: PS. I honestly can’t say ‘** _thank you_** ’ enough to everyone supports this newsletter. Every paying subscriber’s support meant I could afford to get by when I had to take time off at some very tough personal moments recently. Without going in to too much detail, a recent accident meant I needed some emergency treatment in A&E recently and had to skip a few editions unexpectedly. Life happens! I felt bad missing some editions, but helpful readers made sure I was kept in the loop of all their community news for when I returned. You're such a brilliant audience. The newsletter relies on your help to keep the lights on. It’s a business based on goodwill, so thanks again for reading and supporting.

👋 Good morning Edinburgh. A reminder that the Minute is on pause next week and returns a week on Monday, 8 June. I miss it too! I just need to recharge. Thanks for understanding, and no thanks to those who sent nasty emails complaining about the Minute taking a break. Lovely to wake up at 5am to read those... Like everyone, sometimes I need a break! The good outweigh the bad, always, so thanks to everyone who sticks with this newsletter and supports it. It's yours to use and please remember you can find all the daily local listings on TownSpot even when the newsletter is on pause next week. Anyway, back on Monday 8 June. Radiograph of a Family + Between Us + introThis screening is curated by Edinburgh-based Iranian filmmaker Maryam Haddadi, who will also introduce the films. There seems to be something persistent in the experience of being Iranian—something that resists distance, difference, and even division. A kind of invisible thread that continues to bind people to a place called Iran, no matter where they are or how far they have moved away from it. Maryam Haddadi’s Between Us explores this connection through the intimate lens of migration. Using a shared camera between a mother and her child, the film maps an emotional landscape shaped by displacement, distance, and the quiet negotiations of belonging. Yet even within this space of separation, something remains—an unspoken attachment that cannot be fully translated or replaced. Firouzeh Khosrovani’s Radiograph of a Family, on the other hand, turns inward. Through the story of her parents—divided by ideology, shaped by revolution, and living through profound historical shifts—the film reveals how the fractures of a nation can exist within the most intimate unit: the family. And yet, despite these deep differences, a form of connection endures. Together, these two films trace a powerful continuum: from physical distance to internal division. One looks at what happens when we leave; the other at what happens when we stay but are pulled apart from within. And yet both arrive at a similar question—what is it that remains? Perhaps what connects these stories is something deeply embedded in Iranian identity: a shared memory, a long historical consciousness, or a sense of rootedness that transcends geography and ideology. It is not simply nostalgia, nor merely cultural habit. It is something more enduring—something that continues to take us back, in different ways, to the idea of Iran. No matter how different we are, or where we find ourselves in the world, we always have something in common: Iran. And it is through this shared point of reference that connection becomes possible again. Written by Maryam Haddadi. Between Us (dir. Maryam Haddadi, Scotland, 17 mins) A mother and her four-year-old son navigate the emotional terrain of migration through a shared camera, capturing fleeting moments, quiet fears, and enduring love in an attempt to preserve their shared heritage before it fades. Radiograph of a Family (dir. Firouzeh Khosrovani, Norway/Iran/Switzerland, 81 mins) A Pre-and Post-revolutionary story of the daughter of a secular father and a devout Muslim mother, as they co-exist under one roof in Tehran. The Islamic Revolution took place in the director’s home. It affected every corner of their family life. This screening is part of Doc Screen, an initiative run by Scottish Documentary Institute (SDI) in partnership with Filmhouse.Filmhouse Edinburgh **👥 Craigentinny & Meadowbank Community Council. Subscribe for free or upgrade here > 👋 The newsletter will pause for the rest of this week **until Friday** 29 May when I'll send a weekend edition. Then the Minute takes a full week break next week before returning on Monday 8 June. I’ll send a reminder tomorrow too. Remember all event notices can be viewed chronologically at https://www.townspot.co/uk/edinburgh 🌤️ **This week's weather:** Even warmer today, hitting 24C around 4pm. Another full day of sunshine tomorrow with a peak of 21C. Cloudier on Wednesday, then back up to 24C on Thursday. - The full local Met Office forecast is here. 🚉 Part of Leith Walk was closed yesterday morning after a **tram hit a pedestrian**. This means Edinburgh Minute both funded and broke an original award winning investigation. > "Since we published that piece, Aziz's company has pushed ahead with plans to build a giant windowless hotel in the old Debenhams building. Meanwhile, in London, his company has been involved in a "mass eviction" of renters that attracted the attention of Keir Starmer. We also caught them issuing fake electrical safety certificates to tenants. > "The other finalists for the Wincott prize were The Ferret's and The Scotsman's Martyn McLaughlin. Which suggests both that Scotland is home to the best regional financial journalism and that there's a lot of dubious financial shenanigans to investigate!"
