Viruses are highly abundant in the oceans, but there is one place you won't typically find them: in global ocean ecosystem models... until now.
Introducing "vDarwin", an explicit integration of viruses into the MITgcm/Darwin global ecosystem framework:

New preprint from our lab. We demonstrate the presence of highly diverse and temporally dynamic community of Polinton-like Viruses (PLVs), a group of viruses predominantly associated with protists in a marine station over 5 years. PhD student Ethan Mimick is the lead author.
Diversity & distribution of marine PLVs remain largely uncharted, but our study suggests they are a key group of marine eukaryote viruses. This provides foundation for future spatio-temporal ecology work on marine PLVs. Thanks to the co-authors incl @jedfuhrman.bsky.social & @cmbellas.bsky.social !
Blusky friends! I have a favor to ask..if you are on instagram, please follow our lab account. We promise to post cool info on microbes, ongoing project activities and random pictures! It will be great to meet you there!
