Swimming against 30 years of discourse but I think the phrase 'football's coming home' originated at the 1966 World Cup because the tournament was being held in England (the supposed 'home' of football), rather than the trophy being won by England. See Times article from 1966.

Trying to do a wee bit of reading around for a conference paper and my god I can see and feel my access to scholarship shrinking, like in real time. It's mad how quickly and easily this stuff can vanish or become an unjustifiable cost.
