Fascism is emboldened by those in power who refuse to acknowledge (let alone address!) institutionalised racism. Racist violence of this nature is only possible because our digital, social, political, and media ecosystems cultivate it. We must disrupt this organised racism and keep each other safe.

“Reactionaries like Yaxley-Lennon claim they speak for the people. But their politics feeds on division and is founded on exclusion and elitism. And they’re not even popular.” Notorious racists gain traction from media platforms that treat them as popular and reasonable. We must refuse the framing.

The scenes in Belfast last night were disgraceful. Families were targeted because of their skin colour or country of origin, leaving people frightened, homeless and fearing for their safety. The actions of one individual must never be used to stigmatise an entire community, nationality or faith.
“Both African migrants, hiding in the corner as bricks were thrown through the windows of the property… Along with his daughter Paula, they were able to help carry them to safety as they were so scared that ‘they were too weak to stand’.” A racist pogrom in Belfast enabled by anti-migrant politics.

“Look what you made me do.” From men who brutalise their partners to abusers on the streets, victim blaming is another gaslighting feature of fascism. We must continue to hold our media institutions to account for legitimising fascist violence.
You know what isn’t a “legitimate concern”? Feeling enraged about migrants living near you, women rejecting your advances, trans people using a public toilet, gay folks holding hands on the street. You know what is a “legitimate concern”? Rampant racism, misogyny, homo/transphobia. Just saying.
