It is with great sadness that we must announce the death of our colleague and friend Anthony Warner, Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at the Department of Language and Linguistic Science, University of York, who died on 27 May 2026 after suffering a stroke. Anthony was a central figure in historical syntax and the history of English, in the UK and far beyond, and one of the people who did most to shape this Department over nearly four decades.
