this is something i was saying 10 years ago when i worked in user safety, and if anything, it's more true today. politics have made it more permissive for ppl to post their worst thoughts using their real names, while those speaking out against fascism often have their livelihoods put in jeopardy.

@dollspace.gay put it quite well once. Something along the lines of, "It endangers vulnerable people who are forced to out themselves with their real names, but does nothing to discourage Racisms Jane, who posts 5000 MAGA memes a day on Facebook under her real name because she has no shame."

Your periodic reminder that people are *more* abusive online when they're using their "real names" than when they're using a persistent pseudonym and this effect has been replicated in literally every study that has ever been done

I remain of the view that regulation of social media is better than a ban for young people. But I also pretty much agree with all these proposals.
