One of the historical arguments for public authorities (as an institution) was technical competence. This is repeated over and over again in the academic, legal, and trade literatures from the 30s to the 60s. I'm not sure that holds anymore. I'm also not sure why this has changed.

Half a year after the MetroCard retirement, PANYNJ is finally bringing discounted JFK AirTrain fares to OMNY. Starting tomorrow, June 11 at noon, the OMNY system will offer a new $43.50 rolling 30-day fare cap. The group discount also returns, capping at $26.75 for up to 5 riders in 5 minutes.

SURPRISE! PANYNJ completely unprepared for the end of MetroCard sales & transition to OMNY. MetroCard vending machines will go dark Dec 29 with no OMNY vending machines installed to replace them. Cash users need to jump through hoops. Oh, and 10-trip/30-day unlimited cards? There's no replacement.

We’re less than two months away from @mta.info ending MetroCard sales. Meanwhile, at Jamaica…PANYNJ only has two JFK AirTrain OMNY tap-in readers going (out of four installed?) and there’s actually quite a backup for those lanes. Will PANYNJ just keep selling MetroCard as a rogue entity in 2026?
