Ruiz-Torres et al. examine the drivers of microbiome composition among helminth parasites in a bat host. Parasite identity plays a key role in structuring parasite-associated microbiomes, even within a shared host environment.

New MEC study shows that community-dependent feminization induced by Wolbachia in Mermessus fradeorum spiders is weakened by heat stress, demonstrating how environmental history influences microbial dynamics and phenotypes across host generations.

@annikafreudiger.bsky.social et al. assess genetic relatedness on rhesus macaques and find that low-coverage whole-genome sequencing offers an accurate, cost-effective alternative to widely used methods.

The authors review 2800+ relatedness studies published in 2000-2025 and find that most still rely on STR markers. Yet their analyses on macaques show the poor performance of STRs, while low-coverage whole-genome sequencing offers higher resolution at more effective costs.

Great to see @annikafreudiger.bsky.social paper published! š
We analyzed how genetic markers are used to estimate relatedness in wild animals - a big field with 2861 relevant publications. šš§¬
Even in 2026 mainly STRs are used - and we argue for low coverage WGS data and a simple aDNA estimator.

We show that strong hybrid seed inviability evolved rapidly between two incipient lineages of one of the fastest documented radiation in flowering plants, playing a key role in their diversification.
