The only goal is to grow engagement and followers for the social account. This is rampant in media, ofc—the incentives of social being totally different (and sometimes at odds) from the incentives of writers + talkers.

It’s definitely sports misogyny grifting with the Becky-specific focus, given that many people said similar things about the identical issue. But yes, what’s most weird to me is I haven’t seen data suggesting that “more engagement” actually leads to increased referral traffic in any way

There’s a broader thing here which is brands/outlets posting like people rather than news providers bc it drives more engagement that I find off putting, I guess
