Thus, nestboxes can save a population, but also accidentally create an ecological trap! With climate warming, we can’t just put up boxes and hope for the best. We need to be climate‑smart, safe, and built for the conditions birds actually face.

Here, we checked how Lesser Kestrels do when they nest in natural cavities vs. nestboxes in two very different Italian climates. Conclusion: Not everything works everywhere! Nestboxes can be great in one place, but a heat trap in another.

Natural nests stayed about 5°C cooler in both sites. However, in the Po Plain, nestboxes were actually the safer option, with higher chick survival. In Matera, heatwaves pushed nestboxes past 44°C, and chicks didn’t stand a chance.
