Democratic erosion thus seems to be not only something experts assess, but also something citizens perceive. Understanding when and why citizens perceive erosion, even in stable democracies, is crucial for understanding democratic resilience. Read the full report here: www.dpes.nl/wp-content/u...
2️⃣ Who or what is seen as contributing to democratic erosion? While foreign interference (58%) is widely seen as a threat, PVV voters more often point to the EU and “the political system”, whereas D66 and GL/PvdA voters more frequently identify political parties, social media platforms, and AI. 3/🧵
3️⃣ Which political parties are seen as contributing to democratic erosion? PVV (31%) and FvD (28%) are most frequently identified as causes of democratic erosion overall, yet voters rarely blame their own party. Responsibility is typically attributed to parties from opposing ideological blocs. 4/🧵
1️⃣ Which elements of democracy do citizens see as being under threat? Among respondents who perceive (some) erosion, democratic norms (54%) and freedom of speech (52%) are identified by a majority as being in danger. The media follow at 45%. Perceptions vary substantially across voter groups. 2/🧵
🇳🇱 While the Netherlands continues to score highly on international democracy indices such as V-Dem, 40% of respondents in the new Dutch Parliamentary Election Study perceive at least some degree of democratic erosion. A new chapter by @jmvanlit.bsky.social and me explores these perceptions. 1/🧵
