June 6, 1776: Boisrond-Tonnerre, the author of Haiti’s declaration of independence that made the country the first self-ruling state in the Caribbean in 1804, is born to free Black parents. The revolutionary writer-historian also served as secretary to Haiti’s first head of state Jacques Dessalines.
